Pankaj Tripathi and Yami Gautam’s latest film, “OMG 2,” has surged ahead at the box office after a promising start. According to early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk, the movie collected an impressive Rs 17.50 crore on Sunday alone, propelling its total earnings to Rs 43.56 crore. Notably, the film features an extended cameo by superstar Akshay Kumar.
“OMG 2” made its theatrical debut on August 11, sharing the release date with Sunny Deol’s “Gadar 2.” Despite “Gadar 2” maintaining its box office supremacy since its opening, “OMG 2” has been steadily gaining ground. While “Gadar 2” made a robust entrance with Rs 40.10 crore, “OMG 2” began its journey with a more modest Rs 10.26 crore. However, the film witnessed a remarkable upswing over the weekend, pulling in Rs 15.3 crore on Saturday and an additional Rs 17.50 crore on Sunday.
The challenges for “OMG 2” don’t stop with “Gadar 2,” as Rajnikanth’s “Jailer” also entered the fray on the same Friday. Despite these hurdles, the movie continues to hold its own at the box office. With its significant focus on sex education, the film has garnered largely positive reviews.
Critics have lauded “OMG 2” for its handling of sensitive themes. Shubhra Gupta of the Indian Express shared her perspective, saying, “Before watching ‘OMG 2,’ I had my reservations. Could a film in today’s India navigate religious themes without bias? The sequel adeptly embraces a progressive and liberal viewpoint, sidestepping the complexities of diversity. It challenges the unfounded skepticism adults often hold about the natural curiosity and openness of youth exploring their bodies. The film asserts that such exploration is neither ‘indecent’ nor morally reprehensible; in fact, it’s a natural and shame-free process.”
In the face of tough competition and multiple releases, “OMG 2” stands strong as a testament to engaging storytelling and meaningful narratives. Its growing box office figures reflect not only its entertainment value but also its ability to spark important conversations.
